Though Toyota's youthful brand Scion has only been around since 2003, it's already become known for its dependable vehicles. In an annual survey by J.D. Power and Associates, the brand ranked in the top five for dependability based on 2009 models over a three-year period. Participants were asked to report any issues with their vehicles during this time, with the average being 132 for every 100 vehicles Top issues included noisy brakes and excessive wind noise. Overall, 25 out of 32 brands tested improved their scores as compared to the 2008 year models tested in last year's survey. The numbers of issues reported were a 13 percent decrease from last year and the best dependability scores since the survey's inception.
This improvement is impressive, especially since automakers faced financial woes in 2009. As Vice President of J.D. Power automotive David Sargent explains, "Despite facing immense challenges in 2009, automakers placed a keen focus on delivering outstanding levels of quality, which they understood would be essential to their long-term success."1 Toyota had eight winners at the segment level, making it the top automaker involved in the survey, despite some recalls in 2009. So, you know the company must be doing something right!
